Game Summary
Walk-off homeruns are not necessarily commonplace in high school baseball, but don’t tell that to this 2017 iteration of the Sequoia Baseball team. After JR Jack Wangsness’ walkoff grandslam on Wednesday, the Cherokees ended the game with a longball for the second consecutive afternoon on Thursday, this time when JR RF Kasi Pohahau blasted a 2-2 fastball well over the left field wall leading off the bottom half of the seventh. The HR put an abrupt end to a fantastic pitcher’s duel, with Noah Gandelman going six scoreless for the Cougars and Wangsness and JR RHP Travis Mathieu combining for Sequoia. Wangsness went four scoreless for the Cherokees allowing just one hit before giving way to Mathieu in the 5th. Mathieu (1-1) then added three scoreless innings of his own to earn the win and complete the combined 2-hit shutout. Sequoia’s SR SS Matt Casey had the only multi-hit effort of the afternoon, but it was Pohahau’s monster that set off the Cherokees second home-plate celebration in as many days. Sequoia (4-1) is now off until next Thursday when they travel to Menlo-Atherton.
