It is important not to get too far ahead of yourself when talking about sports, but with just five games left on the schedule, and both teams projected as heavy favorites in the other four, Monday’s colossal showdown between the PAL Ocean’s two best teams was weighted with postseason implications. It is likely that the winner of the PAL’s Ocean Division will be the only Central Coast Section playoff qualifier, meaning that the loser of Monday’s contest between Sequoia and San Mateo might be kept out of the postseason. After the Bearcats had stunned Sequoia with a last-minute goal when the two teams played in January, the Lady Cherokees knew that three huge points were necessary. JR Goalkeeper Alejandra Perez made sure they got them. Perez’ third straight clean sheet was the storyline and Brittney Liberatti had the game’s only goal as Sequoia eked out a 1-0 victory to reclaim first place in the division. “It feels good to know we are back in control of our own destiny,” said Sequoia Head Coach Melissa Schmidt. “We need to make sure we don’t get too cocky and show up and play our brand of soccer in these final four games to finish it off.” The Lady Cherokees have two more games this week, both at home against South San Francisco and Jefferson.
