In a game that Sequoia coaches had circled as one of the toughest tests on the non-league schedule, the Cherokees learned they still have some work to do before they open PAL play against Woodside in three weeks time. The visiting Rancho Cotate Cougars, from the powerful North Bay League, rode the arm of all-Empire quarterback Jake Simmons who threw for 344 yards and six touchdowns to the 49-21 decision.

For Sequoia, JR RB Owen Tatola was solid on the ground, carrying 17 times for 105 yards while JR Bryan Madrigal added 62 yards on 14 carries. SR LB Nate Talakai brought the crowd to its feet with a long pick-six that temporarily brought Sequoia within a score at 14-7.
