…After the ceremony [celebrating longtime Santa Cruz Coach Bytheal Ratliff, who passed away last June] the remainder of the night belonged to Sequoia.

Cherokees quarterback Patrick Lopiparo completed 8 of 12 passes for 161 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Two scoring passes went to Duncan Stewart, a 1,000-yard receiver last season, helping Sequoia takes a 27-0 lead at the half.

Santa Cruz’s Reese Scott was 4 of 15 with four interceptions, three by Bryan Madrigal.

Sequoia broke through on its second possession when Lopiparo connected with returning Stewart to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive. Stewart hauled in a 19-yard scoring pass.

In the second quarter, Stewart’s breakaway speed again helped him gain separation on the cornerback as he gathered a 50-yard scoring pass.

The Cardinals, unable to run the ball with success against Sequoia’s big, athletic defensive line, went to the air in an attempt to get back in the game. But Madrigal made the first of his team’s three interceptions — in the span of five pass attempts — in the second quarter. After the first interception, Santa Cruz took over on defense on its own 24-yard line and kept Cherokees out of the endzone. The Cardinals took over on their own 5, but two plays later, Kyle Tarzon stepped in front of receive Johnny Soto for a pick-six and a 20-0 lead.

Madrigal added another interception the next time Santa Cruz had the ball and Lopiparo and the offense made the Cardinals pay again. This time, it was receiver Jordan Barnes crossing the goal line with a 42-yard touchdown reception. Lopiparo avoided a potential sack by Ricky Parra on the play.

Robert Marticorena scored on a 38-yard run for the Cherokees in the third quarter an Nolan Tarzon added a 10-yard scoring reception for the Sequoia’s final score in the third.
