Game Summary
The Cherokees entered the home stretch of their league schedule more than a little banged up, but produced a solid team effort to take an 8-6 decision from Capuchino Wednesday afternoon. With their top three starting pitchers unavailable due to various injuries, Sequoia got five strong innings from SR RHP Matt Smith (3-0), who scattered six hits over 5 innings, allowing just a single unearned run to earn the victory. Smith led the offensive charge as well, helping himself with a 3-hit game including a pair of doubles and 2 RBI. SR 3B Chris Cook, JR LF Brandon Gee and JR CF Kyle Pruhsmeier each contributed multiple hits as well to the Sequoia offense, which racked up 14 hits on the day. The Cherokees actually led the game 8-0 midway through the 5th inning, and JR RHP’s Joey Berljafa and Travis Mathieu withstood a late Mustang surge to preserve the win, with Mathieu ultimately recording his first save of the season. With the win, Sequoia improves to (13-4) (4-2 PAL Bay). These same two teams take the field again tomorrow at Sequoia for a 4:00 start.
