Game Summary
With the sun dipping behind the trees, and Wednesday’s game potentially minutes from being called due to darkness, JR RF Jack Wangsness showed his flair for the dramatic. With the count 2-2. Wangsness blasted a grand slam, his first career varsity HR, making the Cherokees winners in walk-off fashion over visiting San Lorenzo Valley. Wangsness’ HR cleared the bases and capped a 5-run 8th inning rally to make a winner out of Sequoia (3-1) and SR RHP Matt Smith (2-0), who had surrendered a HR of his own in the top of the frame. Smith entered in the top of the 6th, replacing JR LHP Ben Smith who contributed his second consecutive solid start to begin the season. The Cougars rallied with two outs in the 6th to knock the Sequoia starter from the game, and drew first blood in extra innings on the solo HR, setting the stage for the big Cherokee 8th. With 1 out, SO 1B Tino Pohahau drew a walk, as did SR 3B Chris Cook. JR C Kasi Pohahau then skied a twisting popup into shallow center that dropped to load the bases. SR SS Matt Casey then coaxed one more walk scoring pinch-runner Dominic DiGrande with the tying run and bringing Wangsness to the plate. In a 2-1 count, Wangsness dropped down a suicide squeeze bunt that just rolled foul by inches. But on the next pitch, the lanky left-handed hitter rendered the failed squeeze attempt meaningless as he launched a no-doubt HR deep into the trees beyond the right-field wall. The entire Cherokees roster poured from the dugout to greet Wangsness at home plate and commence the first raucous celebration of the early season. Sequoia now will turn around quickly and host Half Moon Bay tomorrow afternoon at 3:30.
