Girls Junior Varsity Soccer, Girls Varsity Soccer · Heartbreak in Final Seconds

89 Minutes into a 90 minute game, the Sequoia Women’s Soccer team had the inside track to a PAL Ocean title and an automatic berth in the Central Coast Section Playoffs. In the game’s final seconds, a bad bounce and a defensive slip left them on the outside looking in. In a massive PAL showdown between prohibitive league favorites Sequoia and San Mateo spent most of the afternoon deadlocked 1-1 following Brittney before the visiting Bearcats final fatal breakaway. In the game’s decisive sequence, the Lady Cherokees controlled the flow, as they had for most of the second half. But a clearance by San Mateo skipped awkwardly on the wet turf, eluding Sequoia fullback Sienna  Falzon. Falzon then slipped and fell in her attempt to pursue the Bearcats forward who slotted the ball past Sequoia keeper Alejandra Perez for the 2-1 advantage. The loss drops Sequoia a game behind San Mateo, but the two will tangle one more time at San Mateo on February 6.
