Sequoia RHP/INF Matt Smith has finalized his commitment to continue playing baseball at the University of Indiana-South Bend. The 6’2, SR has been a consistent contributor to the Sequoia varsity program as both a pitcher and a position player since debuting with the varsity team as a sophomore third-baseman in 2015. With a season still to go, he has amassed 40 hits to go with 18 RBI and a HR. On the mound, he has posted an overall record of 8-2 with a 3.95 ERA including a spectacular sophomore campaign during which he was 5-0.
“Matt is a special kid,” said Sequoia manager Corey Uhalde. “I’m really proud of him. He has come a long way in his time with us and it has been great to watch him grow as a player and as a leader. He has come out this season and really understands that this is his senior season, and he is going to be one of the examples both on the field and off for our program this year.”
The Cherokees, open their regular season February 22nd at home against El Camino, and will be looking to reach the Central Coast Section playoffs for the 7th time in 8 seasons.
