Game Summary
In a loose game Wednesday afternoon against El Camino that featured double-digit walks and 25 total combined runs, Sequoia and visiting CCS D2 champion Menlo School played a very different style on Friday. In a game that was surprisingly tense for this early juncture of the season, Menlo got their only two hits of the afternoon amidst a 2-out, 2-run rally in the top of the 6th to come from behind and beat Sequoia 2-1. The late rally spoiled a brilliant effort by Sequoia starter, JR LHP Ben Smith who went 4 IP of no-hit baseball, striking out 10 and walking 3. SR SS Matt Casey singled home JR DH Tino Pohahau with two outs in the bottom of the 4th to give Sequoia the 1-0 edge. The Cherokees turned to JR RHP Travis Mathieu who recorded a perfect 5th but ultimately ran into a little trouble in the 6th. Menlo SS Griff McGarry walked with one out, but then C Ben Somorjai popped up on the infield. After getting ahead of Menlo cleanup hitter and starting pitcher Chandler Yu 0-2, Mathieu (0-1) nearly ended the inning with a strikeout, but consecutive close pitches were ruled just outside the zone, and on the 2-2 pitch, Yu blasted a double over the head of LF Thomas Kervick to score McGarry. Three pitches later Justin Nam rolled a ball just fair inside the bag at third to score Yu and give the Knights the lead. Nam then went to the mound and handled the Cherokees over the final two frames to earn the save. SR Matt Smith made his first appearance of the year on the mound for Sequoia and recorded a perfect 7th inning. The Cherokees got 2 hits apiece from Casey and JR CF Brandon Gee who is now 5 X 5 on the season, but was forced from the game in the 4th inning with a hamstring injury. Sequoia (1-1) now will host North Monterey County on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.
