The most successful season in several decades for the Sequoia Women’s Soccer Program came to an end with a 2-1 loss at #2 seed Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon. Sequoia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game and appeared poised for a potential upset, but the Bruins answered back quickly, tying the game at 1. Midway through the second half, Santa Clara found the net again to go up 2-1. The final ten minutes of the game were what high school sports is all about. The Sequoia girls sent 3 and even 4 forwards ahead looking for the equalizer, a strategy that produced a flurry of chances, and nearly got the game into overtime. It wasn’t until the final whistle that Santa Clara could finally breathe a sigh of relief and advance in the CCS D1 tournament. The close loss comes on the heels of Wednesday night’s epic Penalty Kick win over San Benito, the first CCS win in the history of the Sequoia Soccer program. The Lady Cherokees finish the season (16-3-4).
