Game Summary
Just two days after an offensive slugfest featured 24 combined runs between Sequoia and Woodside, the rivals hooked up again on Friday in a very different feeling contest. Both starters (JR LHP Jack Wangsness for Sequoia and SR RHP Evan McDonough for Woodside) controlled the pace through the early stages. Wangsness surrendered a first-inning HR to Woodside catcher Joseph King, and the Cherokees evened things up on an RBI single from Kyle Pruhsmeier in the top of the 3rd. Woodside regained the lead, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 4th, and Sequoia went to the bullpen. SR RHP Matt Smith held the line with two scoreless innings. In the top of the 7th SR SS Matt Casey drew a walk and Wangsness, still in the game as an outfielder after leaving the mound, doubled to left scoring Casey all the way from first and finally chasing McDonough from the game. King moved from behind the plate to the mound for Woodside and was immediately greeted by a ringing double to left-center by Pruhsmeier scoring Wangsness. Pinch-runner Trevor Crowell was stranded at second, and Pruhsmeier re-entered the game to take the mound for the 7th. Pruhsmeier, a Fresno St. commit who has been working back from shoulder tightness over the past several weeks made his first appearance since April 5th, and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure his second save of the season. That made a winner out of Smith (4-1). The victory finishes off a season-sweep of the Wildcats and improves the Cherokees to (15-8) (6-5 PAL Bay). Sequoia will play Burlingame beneath the lights at Washington Park on Monday before finishing up the regular season with a home and home against Terra Nova on Wednesday and Friday.
