Game Summary
Entering the final series of the regular season, Sequoia travelled to Terra Nova sitting a game behind the Tigers for 3rd place in the PAL Bay Division. With postseason implications hanging in the balance, the Cherokees got maybe the biggest pitching performance of the season, as JR LHP Ben Smith went the distance, scattering just 4 hits and striking out 12 in the shutout effort. There wasn’t a lot of room for error for Smith either, as TN SR RHP Brett Karalius was nearly as good, holding the Cherokees to six hits and one run while inducing four separate double-play ground balls in a complete game effort of his own. The only offensive damage from Sequoia came in the top of the 4th when JR CF Kyle Pruhsmeier and SR 3B Matt Smith opened the frame with back to back singles. JR C Kasi Pohahau then walked to load the bases with nobody out. SR 1B Chris Cook grounded to second, but was able to leg out the back end of the near-double play to earn his team-leading 28th RBI of the year. Karalius then got SO 1B Tino Pohahau to bounce into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double-play stranding an insurance run at 3rd. With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 7th, Terra Nova kept clawing, with a walk and a single to put the tying and winning runs on base But Smith got the final hitter of the game on a lazy flyball to JR LF Brandon Gee who put it away to end the game and earn the win for Smith (5-1). The win improves Sequoia to (16-9) (7-6 PAL Bay) and vaults them into 3rd place in the league standings with just one game to go. Coupled with Hillsdale’s defeat of Sacred Heart Prep, Sequoia also clinches one of the division’s 5 automatic CCS playoff bids with one game to go as the Cherokees will host Terra Nova on Senior Day, Friday afternoon at 4:30
