The Cherokees feel victim to a series of small mistakes that proved to be the difference in a matchup of Division 1 playoff hopefuls. Sequoia and Pioneer last met in the semifinals of the CCS Division 1 bracket in 2015, and on both occasions, it was the Mustangs coming away with one-run victories. Sequoia struck first on Tuesday afternoon, plating a run in the first on doubles by SR CF Kyle Pruhsmeier and SR C Kasi Pohahau. Pioneer answered right back against SR LHP Ben Smith plating two runs in the second and tacking on one more in the 3rd. The Cherokees rallied with two outs in the bottom of the 4th and tied the game on a two-run single by JR 1B TIno Pohahau. SR RHP Travis Mathieu took over on the mound and tossed a scoreless 6th before surrendering a leadoff single in the 7th, followed by a wild pitch and a passed ball moved the eventual winning run to 3rd where a sacrifice fly gave Pioneer the 4-3 lead. WIth two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Smith flew out deep to the warning track in right-center for the game’s final out. Mathieu (0-1) took the loss for Sequoia (1-2) who will look to bounce back on Friday at Mills.
